Readings
Rhodes is a touring machine. With 2010 marking both the publication of his new novel, Little Hands Clapping, and the tenth anniversary of his first book, Anthropology, there is no sign of this abating. Here goes:
OXFORD, 27th & 28th March: This will be Rhodes’ first public appearance in England since 2007 – and to make up for lost time he’ll be doing three readings, at 3.30 and 7.30 sharp on the Saturday and 1.30 on the Sunday. They’re happening in a tent near the Book Festival’s ticket office and book shop – the tent has something to do with Highland Park whisky and Canongate Books, and will be easy to spot. Rhodes will be reading different stuff each time, and it’s free to get in – just turn up. Other authors involved include Geoff Dyer and Marie Strachan.
THE LAUGHARNE WEEKEND April 9-11th. Once again Rhodes has managed to inveigle his way on to the bill of his favourite festival. His slot is almost certain to be on the Friday afternoon (9th), with Laura Dockrill. Other writers include Rachel Trezise, Roddy Doyle, Niall Griffiths, Toby Litt and Rupert Thomson. As always the writers will be joined by Titans of Rock. Among them this year will be the mighty Richard James, whose album Seven Sleepers Den is Rhodes’ joint favourite record of the decade (along with One Touch by The Suagababes). You can hear some stuff from it here. Also, the magnificent Mark Olson will be playing. Rhodes has been overheard saying that his The Salvation Blues album is up there with the best of the Jayhawks, and that Clifton Bridge is the best song you will ever hear about moving to Bristol. Hear it here.
ABERDEEN, Friday 14th May: Word Festival – a late night, rock ‘n’ roll reading with a bunch of others. Details to follow.
More to come.
